Abstract A measurement is made of the semi-inclusive cross section for the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process ep -> ep'X with a leading proton detected in a forward proton spectrometer. The cross section is presented in terms of the diffractive structure function F_2^D(4)(t,x_pom,beta,Q^2) in the kinematic range 2 < Q^2 < 50 GeV^2, 0.01 < beta < 1 , x_pom < 0.1, 0.08 < |t| < 0.6 GeV^2. The data are fitted using a QCD motivated model in which parton distributions are assigned to a leading pomeron and sub-leading reggeon exchanges.
