Abstract The x and Q^2 dependences of recent diffractive structure function F_2^D(3)(xpom, x, Q^2) data from the H1 collaboration, covering the kinematic range 1.25 < Q^2 < 90 GeV^2, 5*10^-5 < x < 5*10^-2 and xpom < 0.05, are investigated in the framework of diffractive parton distributions and DGLAP evolution. Diffractive parton distributions are derived from leading and next-to-leading order DGLAP QCD fits. Experimental and theoretical uncertainties are determined, taking full account of the correlated experimental systematic errors. The parton densities are used for comparisons with recent measurements of diffractive jet- and D* meson production at HERA as well as with diffractive dijet production at the TEVATRON.
