Abstract A measurement of the cross section of gluon and charmed jets in tagged charm events is performed in the photoproduction kinematic regime in ep collisions at HERA. The data were collected in the years 1999 and 2000 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 48 pb^-1. Events are selected by requiring two jets with pt>7(6) GeV in the central rapidity range. One of the jets is tagged by a high transverse-momentum muon and charm quark production is enriched using signatures based on the different lifetimes and masses of charm, beauty and the light quarks. The structure of the other jet is investigated. Parameters exploiting the different properties of gluon and charm jets are used to determine differential cross sections as a function of eta and x_gamma. Results are compared to predictions of QCD calculation.
