Abstract The diffractive production of the J/psi meson is measured at large four-momentum transfers squared (t) in photoproduction at HERA using data taken by the H1 detector during 1996-2000. The J/psi meson is identified via its decay into two unlike-sign muons. The cross section sigma(gamma p --> J/psi X) is measured as a function of |t| extending into the region of very large |t| > 10 GeV^2. The cross section is measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy W in three |t| intervals and as a function of |t| in two W intervals. The |t| dependence of the polarisation of the J/psi is presented. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations.
