Abstract The electroproduction of rho mesons is studied in the process e p -> e rho Y, where the proton dissociates into the hadronic system Y. The skewing of the rho resonance mass shape in the pi^+ pi^- mass distribution is measured as a function of Q^2. The differential cross sections are presented as a function of Q^2, of the centre-of-mass energy W and of the four-momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, t. An increase in the ratio of proton dissociative to elastic cross sections is observed. Violation of S-channel helicity conservation is confirmed in the proton dissociative rho meson electroproduction process.
